Students from Nesbru VGS recently participated in the national Abel Mathematics Competition, where high school students from all over the country get the chance to compete for glory. The competition consists of multiple rounds, gradually increasing in difficulty.

Two of our own, from the 2IB class, Araz and Jaivardhan, successfully passed the first round and made it to the notoriously difficult round 2. When asked about their experience, they shared, “Round one was way better than round two—we did really well in the first round!” For context, Araz and Jaivardhan, along with Srijan from 3IB, all made it past the first round of the competition. However, round 2 proved to be a real challenge. “The second round was what got us—it was way harder, and we both struggled, so we din’t do too well with the score,” they admitted.

Unfortunately, this meant they wouldn’t advance to the third round, but they still found the experience incredibly rewarding.“I’m really happy that I took part, and it was well worth it. We prepared a lot and really expanded and pushed our knowledge, so it would probably be something for next year. Hopefully, we get more people to join,” said the two students.

The Abel Math Competition is open to all high school students in Norway, and it’s undoubtedly an opportunity worth taking and something you don’t want to miss out on. While the preparation may be challenging, it’s also highly rewarding. As Araz and Jaivardhan have shown, it’s a great experience for any student looking to push their academic limits.

If you are interested in participating the first round is usually held around September, and there is a wealth of practice problems on the Abel website!
